Jakarta – Surabaya high-speed train under serious discussion: transport minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Ministry of Transport assured on Monday that the government’s project to build the high speed railroad connecting Jakarta and Surabaya on the island of Java will no longer be just wishful thinking.

Transport Ministry spokeswoman Adita Irawati said the project had been discussed with other ministries, including the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment.

“It’s not just a speech, it’s [the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed railway] has been seriously discussed. The line ministry is the coordinating ministry for maritime affairs and investment,” he said when contacted on Monday, October 31.

Adita did not respond when asked about the feasibility study and the cost of the mega project in terms of investments. However, she confirmed that the construction of it is at the discussion stage.

Earlier, Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi expressed optimism about the realization of the Jakarta-Surabaya high-speed rail project. He reflected on the construction of the Jakarta MRT, which was doubted by many but ended up being a project felt tangibly by many.

Budi Karya explained that the roads or towns that will be crossed by the high speed railroad will be Jakarta, Karawang, Bandung, Kertajati, Purwokerto, Jogja, Solo, Madiun and Surabaya. This train journey is estimated at only 4 hours.
