Khon Kaen light rail to complement Nong Khai-Bangkok high-speed rail
Khon Kaen province has announced plans to test a new light rail network to complement the Thai high-speed train project, which will link Nong Khai province and Bangkok, as well as the double-track train network linking Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima.
Deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said the prototype of the light trail was on display at Isan Creative Festival 2022 from Feb. 25 to March 6. She added that the 26-kilometer track will connect Samran in the northern part of Khon Kaen city to Tha Phra station in the south by 2025.
Khon Kaen LRT project is supported by Capital Administration and Management Unit of National Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Bureau, Innovation Policy Council for Improvement of the country’s competitiveness (AEC).
AEC has committed 100 million baht over a three-year period to support a research team from Rajamangala Isan Khon Kaen University of Technology Campus (RMUTI-KKC) and Cho Thavee Plc, a leading integrator engineer in Khon Kaen.
Paiwan Kerdtuad, a lecturer at RMUTI-KKC’s faculty of engineering, oversees the manufacturing of prototype parts, which include bogies, bodies, traction motors, traction inverters, cooling systems, auxiliary units of power to pantograph, fixings and a cushion crosspiece.
In 2015, the mayor of Khon Kaen province proposed to integrate the Khon Kaen LRT project into the city’s Smart City initiative.
The Mayor of Khon Kaen Municipality said officials from Khon Kaen Transit System Co (KKTS), a company incorporated and registered to operate the system, are currently conducting an environmental impact assessment of the project. (NNT)
