MP welcomes resumption of passenger train services

Su. Madurai MP Venkatesan thanked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for ordering the restoration of passenger train services.

In a statement, Mr Venkatesan said that in a memorandum he submitted to the minister, together with North Chennai MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy, it was pointed out that the suspension of passenger train services had badly affected the lower and middle classes . “Now the Board of Railways has requested all zonal railways to take action for the restoration of DEMU/MEMU and conventional passenger trains and requested them to send the proposed timetable by 16 August,” said the MP from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Noting that operating schedules for passenger trains have already been sent by all divisions to the Board of Railways, Venkatesan said soon passenger train services will resume across the country.

As passenger trains stop at all bus stations, they carry large numbers of people to nearby towns where they can sell their agricultural products. People also travel for education and employment. “Rural populations have benefited from season tickets used on passenger trains,” he said.

Passenger train services will help maintain social distancing due to the distribution of passengers across different modes of transport, he said.
