Repaint delayed as further work is carried out on steam locomotive 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley
The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust has announced that a problem has been found with LNER A4 No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley which means it cannot carry tours until resolved.
60007 Sir Nigel Gresley returned to steam at the Severn Valley Railway (2 DVD discs available here) after his £1m overhaul prior to Main Line Trials.
Following the success of the Members’ Tour in May, Sir Nigel Gresley was fully certified to operate the main line. However, since then, SNGLT members have been evaluating the locomotive.
A full investigation of an intermittent issue where steam appeared to pass the regulator has been completed. The problem has been traced to the joint between the main steam pipe and the front tube sheet, or possibly the end of the steam pipe tube sheet itself.
Although relatively easy to fix, the problem requires a significant amount of disassembly in the smoke box.
Work is now underway, but means the locomotive will not be back in service until later this summer.
The Trust says it does not expect this to impact its visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in September, but said its paintwork in BR Blue has been postponed, and this will be reassessed in due course and a decision made on the basis of speed of repair and operational requirements.
An SNGLT spokesperson said that “the locomotive will not be available for further use until the end of the summer. We do not expect this to impact the planned visit to the North Yorkshire Moors in September, but painting in BR Blue has been postponed,”
“The Trust expects Mr Nigel Gresley to be in circulation later in the summer, for in all other respects the locomotive performed superbly in trials and on the maiden run. We will inform you of the plans for train travel in due course.
This work will of course cost the Trust – if you would like to donate for their work, please click here.
