Hyderabad: The Telangana government plans to launch a semi-rapid train project to link Hyderabad with Warangal and Vijayawada.
The Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA), a branch of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) was tasked with the project. The authority has launched a call for proposals from recognized companies to prepare feasibility reports.
The high-speed rail project aims to provide fast and safe travel at a reasonable fare for intra-regional passenger movement. The significant population movement between the two corridors has led the government to reflect on the semi-rapid train.
“High-speed rail is different from conventional rail service as it provides fast and safe travel for commuters and also saves time and reduces road travel,” said an HMDA press release. The feasibility report will be based on site visits, primary and secondary sources.
The construction companies will consider the terrain and other technical requirements to come up with suitable development for the different sections of the corridor, the press release added. The feasibility report will also examine the current travel characteristics and estimate current and future travel demand for passenger and freight traffic.
