Steam Locomotive 35011 General Steam Navigation Update – March 2022

The General Steam Navigation Locomotive Restoration Society (GSNLRS) has released its latest update for March 2022.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The 2022 GSNLRS AGM will be held in Blunsdon on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway on Sunday 15th May 2022 (while government guidelines allow). The Swindon and Cricklade Railway will run trains, as well as their on-site cafe open for refreshments. Attendees will be able to see 35011 and the latest progress of the restoration.

Technical update

Boiler – With the majority of the tubes out, the volunteers focused on clearing the rust and scale that had accumulated in the firebox and boiler barrel. This work will continue to allow examination of the boiler.

Trailing lorry – Work is progressing well at North Norfolk Railway Engineering with the chassis and wheels being shot blasted to remove rust and old paint. As the first item to be actively restored, the works become a key milestone in the restoration of GSN.

Crank Axle – Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings for the axle complete, the difficult task of designing a chain drive sprocket is underway. Soon, it is hoped that the Society can begin to find a manufacturer to produce the parts.

Frame – The five large brackets, for the external valve gear and the screw-type diverter, have been removed. These are now surplus and will be offered for sale. Further fitting removals are scheduled to take place throughout this year. The current plan is to relive the chassis to allow for the removal of the front bogie, the torque front axle and the torque rear axle. These can then be sent back for restoration.

Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to looking for volunteers to help the Blunsdon team restore “GSN” or on the sales stand, the Society has a few specific roles they are looking for people to fill. These are:

    1. Someone with relevant legal experience to act in an advisory capacity as needed. It wouldn’t be an onerous or time-consuming task, but it would be a very useful addition to our team.
    2. To kick our engineering progress into high gear, the Society needs to increase its revenue and anyone with fundraising experience or ideas would be extremely helpful to the project.
    3. Advisor with experience in reviewing and drafting engineering/purchasing contracts to assist us when sending parts for contract review etc.

If you are interested in any of the roles mentioned above, please contact Andrew Collett at [email protected] and we look forward to welcoming you to our friendly team.

Fundraising bus trip

To help raise funds for the GSNLRS and the Swindon and Cricklade Railway, a four night, five day coach trip has been organised, starting Monday 30 May 2022, with a day visit to the South Devon Railway, Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway and Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway. Costing £459 per person, you can reserve your place by contacting Holidays & Cruises in Melksham on 01225 865725.
