The Duchess of Sutherland steam locomotive prepares to return to Settle and Carlisle

For the first time in many years, a Coronation Pacific LMS will return to the Settle & Carlisle lineup in March.

Saturday, March 12, LMS Coronation Pacific 6233 Duchess of Sutherland will carry a Vintage Trains rail tour from Birmingham to Carlisle.

The tour will be transported by diesel from the company’s base at Tyseley in Birmingham, where free pre-booked parking is available. Passengers can also join the tour in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Stafford or Crewe.

The train will travel north at up to 80mph on the West Coast Main Line to Hellifield in Yorkshire. At Hellifield, diesel will give way to 6233 Duchess of Sutherland for a demanding climb over the Cumbrian hills to Carlisle where you will have time to visit the border town. It is expected that the steam part of the circuit will be without diesel assistance.

On return, Duchess of Sutherland will give way at Hellifield to a diesel locomotive which will return the train on the West Coast Main Line to Tyseley, stopping at the same stations as on the outward journey.

Seats are available in Pullman, Club, Tourist class or in a private compartment.
