Tyne and Wear Metro wins top prize at Global Light Rail Awards

The Tyne and Wear Metro team won Best Customer Initiative at the prestigious Global Light Rail Awards in London

Metro’s team won the award for their impressive response to the pandemic, ensuring customers felt safe and reassured to travel with them throughout.

The award also celebrated their efforts to welcome customers back as covid restrictions began to be lifted, such as their ‘Take the kids free for the family’ initiative.

The team triumphed against tram and urban transport systems around the world to win the prize.

Nexus, the public body that runs Metro, also won second prize for best technical innovation in rolling stock. This award celebrated Nexus’ largest public consultation to date with a massive 23,000 customers taking part in the unprecedented virtual reality augmented and interactive online process allowing them to take part in the train design process.

The innovative consultation was organized by train manufacturer Stadler and researchers from Newcastle University’s Open Lab Digital Citizenship Department. Emphasis was placed on internal design and also on disabled users with the aim of shaping major changes including more seats, handle changes, bike storage and wheelchair access for all new trains of Nexus which will enter service in 2023.

Nexus also celebrated three gold medals and a silver medal at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ North East Pride ceremony during the same week.

Nexus was also named winner of Regional Campaign of the Year, Best Use of Content and Best Use of Digital and Social Media and came second in the category of Best Public Sector Campaign.

Cllr Carl Johnson, Chairman of the Tyne and Wear Sub-Committee of the North East Joint Transport Committee, said: ‘Metro workers, like many other public transport workers and key workers, have shown a dedication amazing over the past 18 months.

“It’s a huge honor for Metro’s frontline heroes, for Metro itself and for our entire region to be recognized at the Global Light Rail Awards alongside cities around the world.”

Nexus COO Martin Kearney said: “These two awards are nothing less than what the Nexus and Metro team deserve for the care and commitment they have shown to our customers.

“Customers have returned to Metro faster than on any other UK rail network because they feel happy and confident traveling with us.

“Residents are once again making up to 100,000 trips every day on our clean and green public transport, which is a testament to the hard work and innovation of so many people at Nexus over the past year and a half.”
