World’s Largest Steam Locomotive ‘Big Boy No. 4014’ Returns to the Rails to Celebrate 160 Years of Union Pacific

Union Pacific’s famed Big Boy #4014 is set to return to the tracks this summer for his “West Coast Steam Tour.” Kicking off June 26 from Cheyenne, Wyoming, this year’s tour will celebrate Union Pacific’s 160th anniversary, railroad heritage and the communities served by the railroad, visiting the Pacific Northwest for the first time since its handover. in service.

The Big Boy will be exhibited in four cities:

  • July 6, 2022: Sparks, Nevada
  • July 8-9, 2022: Roseville, CA
  • July 15-16, 2022: Portland, Oregon
  • July 21-22, 2022: Boise, Idaho

Exhibit days include locomotive viewing, access to “Discover the Union Pacific Railroad Car,” a multimedia exhibit that provides insight into the past while telling the story of the modern railroad and issues -answers live with the Steam Crew.

Twenty-five Big Boy locomotives were built for Union Pacific to haul heavy goods during World War II and of the eight still preserved, No. 4014 is the only working Big Boy in the world. Weighing in at 1.1 million pounds, it is the second tour since the locomotive was restored for the 2019 ‘Great Race’ tours which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railway, following a retirement that spanned six decades.

“The Big Boy was delivered to the Union Pacific in December 1941 and helped lead the nation through World War II,” said Scott Moore, Senior Vice President – Corporate Relations and Chief Administrative Officer. “It now serves as a reminder of our history and how Rail is the backbone of America. Last year’s tour drew approximately 1.1 million people from the communities we serve, and we look forward to share Big Boy again this summer.

Big Boy #4014 will leave the Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming on June 26, making brief whistle stops in dozens of communities in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming. Further details will be released in May.
